As a triathlon coach and yoga teacher, I love to observe the intersections between yoga and endurance sports. Both teach us to maintain our form and to breathe in the face of intensity.
My book and DVD, both titled "The Athlete's Guide to Yoga," explain how yoga can enhance and complement your training and your life. In my classes and workshops for athletes, we investigate the relationship between form and breath.
Sometimes yoga for athletes is yoga triage--we address the most pressing issues, usually tightness in the hamstrings, hips, and shoulders--to bring balance to the body and foster openness that will later allow more sophisticated asana practice. Sometimes we keep the poses basic; other times we build to deeper poses--Revolved Triangle, say, or Cow-Face with a forward fold, or Handstand. I want my students' yoga experience to inform and enhance their efforts both in sports and in life; in class we draw parallels between yoga practice and physical and mental endurance sports training. Sometimes the yoga feels like work, sometimes it feels like play, but it's always relaxing and always worth it.
